Rituals entered China through several channels. A Tmall Global launch announcement dates to November 2019; its first mainland boutique opened in September 2023. Online selling came first in that sequence. The sources reviewed disclose no China launch budget. They document a regional store rollout and a formal dispute over brand domains.

If you sell fragrance or body care, the sequence helps frame a spending decision: when to add a shop to an online business. A mall lease commits cash before you know what that location will sell.
Research and the public storefront were checked on October 23, 2026. Recommendations below are our analysis. They do not describe Rituals’ private contracts or claim access to its operating accounts.
What the Rituals storefront shows now
The JD shop identifies itself as the Rituals self-operated flagship, JD’s own retail format. Its navigation separates home fragrance from personal care. A shopper can look for reed diffusers or candles, then move into car fragrance without knowing a collection name. Gift sets have their own links.
The retrieved JD shop shows those category routes. It does not expose a complete assortment count or numeric product review counts. Current selling prices are also absent from this view; none can be assigned a value. Source: JD (京东), storefront observation, October 23, 2026. https://mall.jd.com/index-1024553756.html
The self-operated label identifies JD’s retail format. It does not reveal the brand’s wholesale margin or who bears a particular markdown. Even a visible review count would not establish the brand’s sales revenue.
Historical reporting provides a limited price reference. Jiemian reported a Rituals candle at RMB 275 for 290 grams in February 2025. That is a dated example, not a current quote from this JD store.
One candle also cannot establish prices across the brand’s range.
The candle example was RMB 275 for 290 g; the report also described at least five gift-set variants in each of the brand’s classic ranges. Source: Jiemian News (界面新闻), February 2025. https://www.jiemian.com/article/12390823.html
We read this navigation as a way to shop by use or occasion. A gift buyer can browse a packaged offer without assembling individual products. Test whether that helps your buyers find a suitable set; the page alone tells us nothing about the effect on order value.
How Rituals entered China in stages
Each date answers a different question. The online announcement dates a platform launch; it does not tell us when someone first bought the brand through any other route.
The World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) decision provides a separate record of sales through Chinese platforms.
| Milestone | Date or count | What the evidence establishes |
|---|---|---|
| Tmall Global launch announcement | November 2019 | A platform launch documented before mainland boutiques |
| Platform sales in WIPO case facts | September 2021 | Products already sold through Chinese marketplaces |
| First mainland boutique, Shanghai IFC | September 2023 | A physical retail milestone |
| Boutique count in brand event account | 8 in April 2025 | A historical count, not the present estate |
WIPO’s case facts establish platform sales by 2021. The launch and boutique dates use the announcements cited above; the store count is from Rituals’ April 2025 event account. Jiemian reported the brand’s stated focus on the Yangtze River Delta and Greater Bay Area in February 2025. We read that as a regional approach to physical expansion, concentrating attention on markets within reach of those hubs.
Rituals told the reporter that those were its two focus regions. Source: Jiemian News, February 2025. https://www.jiemian.com/article/12390823.html
For your own plan, compare candidate locations with the addresses of repeat buyers, rather than relying only on national order totals. Then price local staffing and rent, including the extra stock you would need to keep that shop supplied.
Online sales preceded the mainland boutique
Tmall Global, Alibaba’s cross-border marketplace, gave Rituals an online route into mainland China before its first boutique. The sequence permits a narrow inference: the brand could sell before adding that store’s fixed commitments. It does not establish that online sales paid for the store, or that the waiting period was a deliberate test.
Treat cross-border store setup and physical retail as separate decisions in your own plan. List which products can enter through the proposed route, then identify what must change before they can be stocked in an ordinary mainland shop. Ask for a written product-by-product assessment before you approve stock for either route.
Before committing to a mall, look at what the online store keeps after returns and paid traffic. Check repeat purchases outside festival discounts too. Write down the result that would justify a physical shop before the search for a location starts.
What the public record can say about cost
There is no verified China launch total in these sources. The Shanghai store’s construction bill and rent are undisclosed. We also found no China customer-acquisition cost. Counting stores cannot fill those gaps.
Jiemian’s reporter saw a sink for product trials inside the Shenzhen MixC World boutique. That makes the service format observable. Our cost inference is limited to fixtures and staff time needed for trials. The amounts remain private.

Build your own estimate from quotes. Lease deposits and fit-out payments belong on a cash schedule separate from recurring store expenses, alongside the stock needed before opening (including products that staff will use in trials). For your own operating plan, ask how damaged gift sets will be handled when the bottles remain saleable but the packaging does not.
Include trial stock in the opening order and assign someone to approve its use.
The Tmall Global cost calculator can frame a separate marketplace scenario. Its category assumptions are not Rituals’ historical fees and cannot price a physical boutique.
Add your own stock and operating quotes before treating any scenario as funded.
The dispute over the brand’s Chinese domains
The domain record adds a different kind of cost: elapsed time. WIPO received Rituals’ complaint concerning rituals.cn and rituals.com.cn on July 7, 2021. The decision dated September 15 ordered both transferred.
The elapsed interval was 70 calendar days, calculated from the dates in decision DCN2021-0019. It measures complaint receipt to decision, not transfer implementation. The decision states no legal bill or lost-sales amount. Source: WIPO Arbitration and Mediation Center (世界知识产权组织仲裁与调解中心), September 2021. https://www.wipo.int/amc/en/domains/decisions/text/2021/dcn2021-0019.html
The case does not establish a postponed store opening. The gap between the online announcement and the first boutique also cannot be called wasted time from this evidence.
Our lesson is to check control of brand assets before spending on launch traffic. Keep the account record with the brand: it should name the owner and identify who holds recovery access. Renewal ownership belongs in the operating agreement. A storefront can be live while another part of the brand’s local presence is disputed.
What another fragrance brand should copy
Give a marketplace launch a budget and a test period, then assess a boutique on its own economics. Compare the proposed service with the staff hours it needs. Who covers the register when an assistant is helping someone try a product?
To check a store’s navigation, ask someone unfamiliar with the brand to find a gift and then a replacement for a product they already use. Where they hesitate can help you decide which bundles need a clearer description.
If a potential operator cites global growth, ask for evidence from China. Their proposal should name the stock owner and say who approves discounts. Those terms affect how much the brand keeps after a sale, alongside the operator’s charges.
Questions about the Rituals China entry
Did Rituals enter mainland China only in 2023?
No. The dated Tmall Global launch announcement precedes that year, and WIPO’s 2021 case facts already describe sales through Chinese platforms. September 2023 dates the first mainland boutique in the brand’s account. Keeping those milestones separate prevents a physical opening from being mistaken for the start of all sales.
Can the store count establish its China investment?
The count cannot produce a reliable investment total. A useful estimate needs the actual lease terms and a fit-out quote for the proposed site. It also needs inventory funding and the cost of staff before opening. Price those commitments for your own operating model; the historical count supplies none of those amounts.
Does the domain case reveal how long a launch was delayed?
The case records an elapsed interval, not staff hours or a typical recovery forecast. It establishes no delay to a launch. For planning, check ownership early and budget for the advice your own situation requires. The outcome of this dispute cannot tell another brand how long its case will take.
