Brands leaving Tmall Global: what exits tell you

Read brand exits by channel, stated reason and store economics before deciding whether to change your Tmall Partner or close your flagship.

A Chinese store operator checks a returned cardigan beside a Tmall Global apparel screen in a Guangzhou office.

Brands leaving Tmall Global can be changing channels or cutting a wider business. The notices examined here do not disclose store economics. Check which store closed and where the brand said shoppers could go next. Then test your own margins and partner arrangement before copying its decision.

Tmall Global is Alibaba’s cross-border marketplace. A report about a Tmall flagship does not, by itself, establish that the store used that route. Also separate a dated closure notice from an empty storefront or a product that is temporarily unavailable.

The historical closure announcements below were checked on October 28, 2026. They show what the brands announced at the time, not which channels sell their goods today. For the operating roles behind a flagship, the guide to finding a Tmall Partner explains what to check before appointing the company that runs your store.

Brands leaving Tmall Global: check the channel first

Only the Everlane notice below explicitly identifies an overseas flagship. The other rows are Tmall closures included for comparison. Counting every row as a cross-border exit would overstate what these sources establish. This selected case list cannot measure how often brands leave the platform.

Everlane’s notice gives a reader an actual destination. The other statements do not support a claim that the departing brands moved their stores to Douyin or another marketplace. Nor do they disclose customer acquisition costs or blame a named operator.

Calculate margin after advertising and refunds

For your own store, the question is whether each additional sale leaves enough money to support the operation. Start with receipts after refunds. Deduct product cost and the costs triggered by an order, including delivery and the applicable selling fees. Account for advertising separately. The amount left must cover fixed operating costs before the store earns a profit.

Basket value alone can’t settle that question. A large basket with a deep discount can leave less money than a smaller full-price purchase. Ask the partner to show the difference using completed orders, with returns tied back to the orders that generated them.

Our Tmall Global cost calculator shows why the advertising assumption deserves its own discussion. Its default paid-media share is the share of sales attributed to paid media, not the share of the marketing budget spent on ads. Return on ad spend (ROAS) divides ad-attributed sales by advertising spend.

TheChinaPath calculator data, October 2026: with 60% of total sales attributed to paid media and a 2x return on ad spend, modeled paid-media spending equals 30% of total sales, or gross merchandise value (GMV). These are editable planning inputs, not observed brand results or a quote for our services. The arithmetic is 60% divided by 2. The model attributes that share of sales to advertising. It does not test how many would have happened without ads. Change only the return on ad spend to 3x, and the modeled media share falls to 20%. That comparison says nothing about what Everlane or Urban Outfitters spent.

That media bill excludes product cost and the rest of the store’s expenses. Ask a prospective operator for a downside case using your actual margin. The plan needs room for refunds and the costs that remain after advertising has been paid. A sales forecast without those deductions cannot tell you whether keeping the store makes sense.

Check which orders the partner counts in its ad report. If its dashboard includes orders later refunded, reconcile those orders before using the reported return on ad spend in a cash forecast. Keep the reporting period consistent so a recent campaign is not judged against older orders whose return period has ended.

Put the contract beside the store report

Once the sales report adds up, check who carries the remaining cost.

A Tmall Partner, or TP, runs marketplace operations. The party that paid for inventory has money tied up when the stock stops moving.

In a service arrangement, a brand pays for store operations and normally continues to fund inventory. In a buy-out arrangement, the partner buys stock for resale. Check the signed terms before assuming either label describes your deal. The published comparison of agency and distributor arrangements sets out the ownership questions to ask.

For a service partner, examine what earns the commission. If the contract pays on sales booked before refunds, compare that amount with the money you actually retain. Ask for a reconciliation and propose a fee base that both sides can reproduce from the same records. If that deduction is agreed, the invoice should show how refunds reduced the commission base.

For a buy-out partner, separate its purchases from consumer demand. A shipment to the partner does not tell you how much stock shoppers kept. Request sell-through records and stock age by receipt date before treating a new purchase order as proof of a healthy channel.

Review an item that needed a price change, or a product page that needed correcting. Record when the issue was raised and who could approve the fix. If the brand’s own approval process caused the delay, replacing the operator leaves that problem in place.

Decide what must change before spending again

In the recovery brief, name the loss you want to reduce and the evidence that would justify further spending. Set a review date that allows the relevant orders and returns to settle, with a cash ceiling the brand can afford.

If the proposed test cannot stay within that cash ceiling, reduce the scope or end the test before authorizing more spending.

The brief should distinguish costs the operator can change from costs the brand controls. Better store execution will not fix a product margin that disappears at the price shoppers will pay. Poor stock availability can make a workable product look unprofitable because advertising sends buyers to an unavailable size.

Before switching partners, identify the registered store owner and the permissions a replacement would need. Have both sides document who can export aggregate operating reports and authorize access. Treat any proposed transfer as conditional until the relevant platform process and contract have been checked for that store. Include the handover cost in the comparison with keeping the current operator.

If you decide to close, budget for the work after the last sale. Assign a named owner for unresolved customer claims after the sales stop. Reconcile unsold stock and record the agreed treatment of prepaid funds separately from costs already consumed. Do not assume a deposit is immediately available cash merely because sales have stopped. Its recovery affects cash timing; it does not undo losses already incurred.

A move to another channel needs its own forecast. Changing the storefront does not establish that shoppers will follow, or that the new route will cost less. Before signing, have the candidate cost the work using your remaining stock and the demand you can document.

Compass can help you find candidates once you have decided what a replacement needs to do. Your search brief should specify whether you need a store operator or a buyer of inventory.

Questions before changing partners

Does a closed Tmall store mean the brand left China?

Read the notice’s scope and any destination it names. Everlane’s historical notice directed shoppers to its global website. A store closing can also sit within a wider retreat. Check the current selling channels separately; an old notice does not establish present-day availability or whether an independent reseller is authorized.

Do these closures show that Tmall Global does not work?

They do not provide enough evidence for that conclusion. The cases cover different store types and company decisions, and they do not supply the economics of the closed stores. For your own business, compare settled sales with the full cost of earning them, then examine whether a change you can actually make would improve the result.

When is replacing the partner justified?

Replacement deserves consideration when the records show failures within the partner’s agreed scope and a credible replacement can correct them. Examples include unresolved stock reporting or repeated execution delays. First check whether the brand supplied the approvals and resources the work required. Put the expected improvement in the new brief so the next partner is judged against a stated job.
