What it costs to sell lighting and decor in China

Lamps open on JD Worldwide for a US$5,000 deposit and 4.9% a sale. Tmall Global asks 50,000 RMB, 30,000 a year and 5%. Douyin lists no lighting rate.

In a lighting showroom in Guzhen, Zhongshan, a saleswoman checks a JD Worldwide lamp page on her laptop while a colleague holding a boxed table lamp points at the screen.

Start on JD Worldwide. A lighting brand opens a flagship there on a US$5,000 deposit, pays no annual fee and gives up 4.9% of each sale. Tmall Global wants 50,000 RMB, 30,000 RMB a year and 6% with the payment fee. Douyin publishes no cross-border rate for lamps. And keep each piece under 5,000 RMB.

That last line matters more in lighting than in most categories. If your floor lamps or pendants price near China’s 5,000 RMB cross-border ceiling, the line decides how much tax your shopper pays.

Here’s the fee sheet for the consumer range, lamps first, decor below.

First year (RMB unless stated) Tmall Global JD Worldwide Douyin cross-border
Security deposit, refundable 50,000 US$5,000 flagship (about 35,500) 500 to 5,000
Lighting: annual fee 30,000 none no lighting category
Lighting: commission per sale 5%, plus 1% Alipay 4%, plus 0.9% transaction fee no lighting category
Home decor: annual fee 60,000 (30,000 or none for new stores to March 2027) none none
Home decor: commission per sale 5%, plus 1% Alipay 3%, plus 0.9% 6%, plus 4% on Douyin Mall and Doubao orders
Cash in before the first sale, lighting 80,000 about 35,500 not published

The cost to sell lighting in China, platform by platform

Tmall Global files lamps under its own home-lighting line, on the cheaper of its two annual-fee tiers. Decorative objects sit on the dearer one.

Tmall Global charges home lighting (家装灯饰光源) a 5% technical service fee and a 30,000 RMB annual fee, and home decor (家居饰品) 5% and 60,000 RMB, under the schedule in force from September 9, 2026. Mix the two in one store and you pay for the decor. The same schedule bills a store that trades across categories at the highest annual fee among them. New stores get a break until March 31, 2027: 30,000 RMB in the 60,000 tier, or nothing for the home lines on a separate waiver list that Tmall doesn’t publish. Ask the category manager.

JD prices lighting a point above decor and asks a bigger deposit from anyone who isn’t the brand.

JD Worldwide charges lighting (灯饰照明) a 4% operating support fee plus a 0.9% transaction fee. A brand flagship deposits US$5,000; other store types deposit US$10,000 to US$15,000 depending on monthly sales. Home decor pays 3% plus 0.9%, with a US$3,000 flagship deposit. Then Douyin. Its cross-border fee sheet runs to well over a hundred category lines, and none of them is a lamp. Its domestic rules treat home lighting as a category of its own, so the gap on the cross-border sheet is real.

Decor is on the sheet, at the top of the range.

The route for lamps: the list, the tax and CCC

Start with the list. Chandeliers, table, bedside and floor lamps and other electric light fittings are all on the positive list the cross-border route accepts. A lamp in a CITES-listed material is not. Unpowered fittings pass only as decorative candle holders.

The cross-border retail import list (2019 edition) covers chandeliers, electric table, bedside and floor lamps (CITES-listed goods excluded), searchlights and other electric lamps and lighting fittings, and non-electric fittings limited to decorative candle holders. The 2022 adjustment moved those lines to the new tariff codes for LED and other chandeliers, ceiling and wall lights, table, bedside and floor lamps, and other electric lamps. Inside the limits the shopper pays 9.1%: zero duty and 70% of the 13% import VAT.

The cross-border retail import tariff rate is set at 0%, and import VAT and consumption tax are levied at 70% of the statutory payable amount. Source: Ministry of Finance (财政部), 财关税〔2016〕18号, March 2016. http://www.mof.gov.cn/gp/xxgkml/gss/201603/t20160324_2510682.htm

Above 5,000 RMB the math turns. One item over the line can still come in cross-border, as the only item in the order, with tax charged in full.

Where the dutiable price exceeds the 5,000 RMB single-transaction limit but stays under the 26,000 RMB annual limit, and the order holds only one item, it may enter through cross-border retail with duty, import VAT and consumption tax charged in full. The 2026 most-favored-nation duty is 5% on chandeliers and ceiling or wall lights, 10% on table, desk, bedside and floor lamps, and 6% on most other electric lamps. Take a 6,000 RMB floor lamp. Duty is 600 RMB and 13% VAT on price plus duty adds 858, so the shopper pays 1,458 RMB, about 24%. Priced at 4,990 it would carry 454. The same 6,000 RMB as a pendant pays 1,119 RMB, about 19%, because ceiling lights carry half the duty.

Certification is the harder part. China’s compulsory certification, CCC, covers mains lamps.

The CCC catalogue covers luminaires above 36 volts: fixed and recessed fittings such as chandeliers and pendants, portable table, floor and clamp lamps up to 250 volts, and children’s lamps. Battery-powered portable lamps and light strings are excluded. That binds general trade. No regulator text we found says whether it binds a bonded cross-border parcel, so plan on certifying anything mains-powered you’ll ever want in a Chinese shop. A battery-powered table lamp sits outside the catalogue.

Labels split by route. A cross-border order page carries a risk notice and a Chinese electronic label, and the box ships as it is.

Goods are bought directly from overseas and may have no Chinese label; consumers can view the Chinese electronic label on the website. Product labels must give the product name and the maker’s name and address in Chinese, plus specification, grade and main components where the product calls for them. What one lighting order costs

We found no filed average for a lighting basket, so here are three assumed ones: an 800 RMB table lamp, a 2,500 RMB pendant and a 4,800 RMB floor lamp just under the line.

Basket (RMB) Tmall Global, cost per kept order (RMB) Share of the order JD Worldwide, cost per kept order (RMB) Share of the order Tax the shopper pays (RMB)
800 table lamp 67 8.4% 58 7.2% 73
2,500 pendant 174 7.0% 146 5.8% 228
4,800 floor lamp 320 6.7% 264 5.5% 437

Cost per kept order at the lighting rates above and the per-parcel defaults in our Tmall Global and JD Worldwide models: 4 RMB pick and pack, 11 RMB last mile, a 5% return rate and 15 RMB return handling. Source: TheChinaPath calculator data, October 2026.

The percentage does almost all the work. On the pendant, commission and payment fees are 150 of Tmall’s 174 RMB. JD’s lower rate saves about 29 RMB on every kept order.

A caveat on the parcel line. Fifteen RMB was set for a shoebox, and a boxed floor lamp is not a shoebox. Glass breaks, too. Treat both lines as floors and put in your own quotes.

Now breakeven, at the 2,500 RMB pendant and an assumed 50% gross margin. Each kept order leaves about 1,076 RMB on Tmall. The fixed side is mostly the operating partner, loaded at the model’s default 35,000 RMB a month, plus a 25,000 RMB store build written off over three years and the annual fee. That’s about 426 kept orders, roughly 1.07 million RMB of sales (near US$150,000). On JD it’s about 388 orders and 970,000 RMB.

In cash, the fixed side comes to about 475,000 RMB for year one on Tmall and 445,000 on JD, before stock, ads and the refundable deposit. Nearly all of it is the partner.

Which platform first

JD Worldwide, for the consumer range. It costs less to open and less per order, and lamps and decor share one store with no annual fee at all.

Two things flip it. If the range is mostly pieces above 5,000 RMB, the cross-border tax edge is gone; sell through a Chinese importer with CCC in hand. And if decor is the bigger half of the catalogue, Douyin’s 500 RMB deposit makes a cheap test, at 6% to 10% a sale.

None of this covers architectural or specification lighting. That’s a project-sales business, won through designers, contractors and tenders, and a marketplace answers only for the consumer range. The project side runs through distribution in China.

Our record in this category

We launched and ran iGuzzini’s cross-border Tmall store for a lighting maker that sells mostly through projects. It chose Tmall Global and the case page reports 24 months of sustained sales growth. It publishes no revenue figure, so neither do we.

Run your own numbers

Neither calculator has a lighting row yet. Open the JD Worldwide setup and run calculator, pick Custom and type 35,500 RMB for the US$5,000 deposit and 4% for commission. The 0.9% transaction fee is already loaded. In the Tmall Global calculator, pick Custom and type 50,000, 5% and 30,000.

Questions we get asked

Can I sell lamps on Douyin cross-border?

Douyin’s cross-border fee sheet, dated July 2026, names no lighting category, so there’s no published rate to plan on. Decor is there at 6%, plus 4% on Douyin Mall and Doubao orders. Ask Douyin’s cross-border team before you build a lamp store on it.

Do imported lamps need CCC certification?

Under general trade, mains-powered lamps above 36 volts are on the CCC catalogue and need certification before sale. Battery-powered portable lamps and light strings are not. We found no regulator text that settles the cross-border case, so certify anything mains-powered you plan to sell in China at scale.

What happens to a lamp priced above 5,000 RMB?

It can still ship cross-border if it’s the only item in the order. The shopper then pays full duty and full VAT: about 24% on a floor lamp and 19% on a pendant, against 9.1% inside the limit. Two pieces worth more than 5,000 RMB together can’t use the route.

Send us your ten best-selling pieces with retail prices and power sources, and we’ll show you which clear the 5,000 RMB line and what each costs per order: start with cross-border setup.
