The Douyin return rate depends on what you sell, and live rooms push it past what shelf stores see. Merchants put food and daily goods near 5%. CCTV puts women’s clothing bought online at 50% to 60%, and apparel livestreams above 80% during Double 11 2025. So pay your partner on sales after returns, and budget by the kept order.
Douyin is China’s short-video app. Brands sell on it through live rooms and short videos, and a foreign brand shipping from abroad uses Douyin Global, the cross-border store format. The agency that runs the store is what Douyin calls a service provider and brands call a Douyin Partner (DP).
Douyin doesn’t publish return rates by category. The table keeps what traces to a dated source, checked in September 2026, and shows what each rate does to the cost of an order the customer keeps. One warning: Chinese reports often lump refunds before shipping in with parcels sent back.
| Category or channel | Reported return rate | Source and date | Running cost per kept order, RMB 250 basket |

| Food and daily goods, Douyin | About 5% | Merchants, Jiemian, Aug. 2023 | RMB 167 |
| Women’s apparel, Taobao shelf store | 30% to 40% | An apparel merchant, Jiemian, Aug. 2023 | RMB 232 at 30% |
| Women’s apparel, Douyin | 50% to 60% (Douyin disputes it) | The same merchant, Jiemian, Aug. 2023 | RMB 331 at 50% |
| Women’s apparel online, all platforms | 50% to 60% | CCTV, Jan. 2026 | RMB 331 at 50% |

Why the Douyin return rate runs higher in live rooms
A shelf store waits for a shopper who already wants the product. A live room sells to people who hadn’t heard of it ten minutes earlier, while a host counts down the stock and comments scroll past faster than anyone can read. The order goes in on a feeling (that’s the format working as designed).
Then the buyer cools off.
Plenty of shoppers ask for a refund before the parcel leaves the warehouse, merchants told Jiemian. The rest open the box at home. Clothing is where that goes wrong: size, fit, fabric, a color that looked different under studio lights.
Food behaves differently. An opened pack rarely comes back, and a cheap item isn’t worth a trip to the courier.
Douyin has also made returns cheaper for the buyer. Since July 3, 2026 its return-shipping insurance covers door pickup for parcels up to 3 kg, up from 1 kg.
Douyin raised free door pickup under its return-shipping insurance from the first 1 kg to the first 3 kg, without raising merchants’ premiums. Cuts to the insurance saved merchants more than RMB 6.5 billion in the first half of 2026. Source: Guangzhou Daily (广州日报), July 2026. https://news.dayoo.com/finance/202607/03/171077_54975872.htm
That helps conversion. It also means your category’s rate won’t drift down by itself.
What Douyin says about its return rate
Douyin argues with the extreme figures and says little about ordinary ones. During the June 2025 sale known as 618, posts claiming Douyin returns topped 90% spread on social media. Douyin called it a paid smear.
Douyin said low-follower accounts claimed during 618 that its return rate exceeded 90%, that their screenshots showed refund rates that did not match, and that one poster admitted inventing it for advertising money. What it didn’t do was publish a rate of its own. Inside the company, the tone was different. At the group’s all-hands in January 2026, ByteDance chief executive Liang Rubo put the return rate among the quality metrics Douyin still has to improve.

Meanwhile the rules have tilted toward the merchant. In April 2025 Douyin said it would stop stepping into refund-without-return claims on goods already received, unless necessary, and leave them to seller and buyer. Opened food and damaged goods are the exception: the buyer gets the refund and the seller collects the goods.

Since February 1, 2026 national rules bar platforms from pushing that cost onto merchants.
Platforms may not use their rules to force merchants, openly or in disguise, to bear refund-without-return liability (Article 27, in force February 1, 2026). Douyin’s 2026 merchant package leans the same way, with more support for stores whose settlement rate (the share of orders that stick) is high.
Douyin said it would support merchants with high settlement rates and fast shipping, screen out abnormal orders earlier to cut malicious returns, build a tool that diagnoses return causes and use “net transaction bidding” to cut ad spend lost on instant refunds. Cost per kept order at 5%, 30% and 50% returns
We ran our Douyin cost calculator at its defaults and moved only the return rate. Year-one sales of RMB 2 million at a RMB 250 basket make 8,000 orders. The DP retainer is RMB 30,000 a month with 5% commission. Creators sell 80% of the volume at 20% commission, and Qianchuan, Douyin’s ad system, returns 2.5 times its spend.
| Return rate | Orders kept | Running cash, year one (RMB) | Per order placed (RMB) | Per order kept (RMB) | Sales kept (RMB) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 5% | 7,600 | 1,270,800 | 158.85 | 167.21 | 1,900,000 |
| 30% | 5,600 | 1,300,800 | 162.60 | 232.29 | 1,400,000 |
| 50% | 4,000 | 1,324,800 | 165.60 | 331.20 | 1,000,000 |

The running bill barely moves, since the model charges RMB 15 to handle a return. Kept orders fall instead. At 50% returns you spend RMB 331, about US$47, to keep an order worth RMB 250. The year’s running cost is higher than its kept sales, and you haven’t paid for any product yet.
The model charges packaged food, its default, a 2.5% platform fee. Apparel pays 6%, adding RMB 8.75 per order placed.

The model is harsh in two places. It charges pick, pack and delivery on every order placed, though many Douyin refunds happen before anything ships. And it holds the sales-linked lines at gross, which is where your contract comes in.
Commission on gross or net sales
This is the part to carry into the negotiation. Douyin already pays creators on kept orders.
Commission is not settled on orders refunded inside the after-sale period, and settled commission is recovered (for cross-border stores, from the commission account). Customs treats cross-border tax much the same way.
Where the return is applied for within 30 days of release and the goods reach the original bonded site within 45 days, the tax is not collected. Source: General Administration of Customs (海关总署), Announcement No. 45 of 2020, carried by China Quality News (中国质量新闻网), March 2020. https://www.cqn.com.cn/ms/content/2020-03/30/content_8445884.htm
Run both through the same inputs and the kept-order cost drops to RMB 205 at 30% returns and RMB 268 at 50%, by our arithmetic on the calculator’s lines.
That leaves the DP commission at gross: 5% of RMB 2 million, or RMB 100,000 a year. Paid on net sales it would be RMB 70,000 at 30% returns and RMB 50,000 at 50%, which brings the kept-order cost down to RMB 200 and RMB 256.
So write the base into the contract: sales after refunds and returns, as the shop backend reports them once the after-sale window closes. Douyin runs creators on that clock.
What a partner can do to bring returns down
A good DP treats the return rate as its own number. You can see it in how the store is run:
- Answer inside Douyin’s clocks. A day for a refund asked before shipping, a day and a half for a return request. Silence counts as a yes.
- Sell the fit. Chinese sizes on the chart, and the host’s own height and size said on air.
- Cool the script. Countdown pressure fills the cart, then the returns pile. Watch a recorded session before you sign.
- Report returns by reason. Per SKU and per creator, every week.
- Bid on kept orders. Qianchuan’s net-transaction bidding stops paying for clicks that end in an instant refund.
- Watch the customs clock. Cross-border returns have to reach the bonded site inside the window, or the tax on them stays payable.
Merchants must handle a pre-shipment refund request within 24 hours and a return-and-refund request within 36 hours. If they don’t, the system treats the request as approved. Ask every candidate DP for its return rate in your category, after returns, straight from the backend. Our guide to finding a Douyin Partner lists the other numbers to ask for, and the Douyin cost calculator runs your own rate through a full year. The 61.5% figure came from Double 11, China’s November sale, so give the peak its own numbers; our Double 11 checklist covers it.

Frequently asked questions
What is a normal return rate on Douyin?
There isn’t a single one. Food sits near the bottom, women’s apparel near the top, with apparel livestreams past 80% at Double 11 2025. For planning, run 5% for food and both 30% and 50% for apparel, then replace them with your partner’s own rate from the backend.
Who pays for return shipping on Douyin?
Usually return-shipping insurance, with the premium on the merchant’s side. Since July 2026 that cover includes free door pickup for parcels up to 3 kg, and Douyin says merchants’ premiums didn’t rise. Heavier parcels are charged less for the extra weight than before.
Should I pay a Douyin Partner on gross or net sales?
Net. Douyin already cancels creator commission on refunded orders. Pay the DP on sales after refunds and returns, taken from the backend once the after-sale window closes. At 50% returns on RMB 2 million of sales, that’s RMB 50,000 a year less at a 5% rate.
