Douyin store vs Douyin ads: which one you actually need

Douyin store vs Douyin ads: setup cost, daily workload, content, who must be in China, and margin, side by side, with our calculator's numbers.

A host holds up a skincare bottle to a phone on a ring-light tripod in a Nanjing office livestream room while a colleague answers Douyin shopper chats on a laptop

A Douyin store is an operating commitment. Someone answers shopper chats in under 90 seconds from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m., China time, ships bonded orders within 48 hours, and puts up new video every week. Douyin ads and creator posts are a budget line. Most foreign brands that open the store only wanted the budget line.

So the Douyin store vs Douyin ads decision comes down to staffing more than marketing. Media runs on money and a brief. Opening a store means a team that works to the platform’s deadlines seven days a week, plus a mainland company that answers for it to customs.

The cash gap is wide. At the default settings of our Douyin calculator, a cross-border store costs RMB 1,700,800 in its first year on RMB 2 million of sales. RMB 405,000 of that comes back on exit. Every Douyin rule cited below was rechecked on the platform’s own pages on October 2, 2026.

A Douyin cross-border store at RMB 2 million of year-one sales costs RMB 1,700,800 in year-one cash, RMB 405,000 of it refundable, and its running cost equals 63.5% of sales. Source: TheChinaPath calculator data, September 2026.

Why brands mix them up, and what it costs

Douyin has just over a billion monthly users.

A brand manager watches a creator clear a product’s stock in one evening and concludes the brand needs a store. On Douyin, that’s correct as far as it goes, because a sale only happens in a Douyin store. Taobao and JD products left the livestream cart in 2020, and the current creator rules bar videos from steering viewers to buy anywhere else.

The trouble is the order. Being seen on Douyin is a media purchase. Checkout on Douyin comes with a year of daily operations, RMB 1.7 million of cash at our calculator’s defaults, and you pay before anyone knows whether the brand’s videos convert.

Douyin as media: what it does, what it costs, what it leaves behind

For a brand without a store, media on Douyin means creator posts bought through Xingtu (巨量星图), the platform’s creator marketplace, and feed ads bought through Ocean Engine, ByteDance’s ad system.

Xingtu’s floor is low.

The creators are where the money goes.

Divide one by the other (the two periods differ by three months) and the average brand bought about eight sponsored posts a month, roughly two a week. Feed ads come on top. Ocean Engine publishes no dated rate card for them, so we haven’t priced them here.

Qianchuan, the tool most people mean by “Douyin ads,” belongs to the store route. Douyin opens it to merchants, agencies, and creators who sell on the platform, and its credits only promote Douyin products and livestreams with a cart.

Qianchuan is open to merchants, agencies, and creators with livestream, short-video selling, or mall promotion needs; its promotion credits are used only for Douyin e-commerce products and cart-enabled livestreams, and a plan’s daily budget defaults to a minimum of RMB 100. Where does the buyer go, then? To search. A viewer who likes the video opens Tmall or JD and types the brand name. You won’t see that path order by order. You’ll see it in your Tmall Global or JD Worldwide store’s search traffic, and in comments asking where to buy.

The reach ends with the budget. The videos stay, though. Xingtu lets a brand run a creator’s original post as an ad once the creator agrees, and that authorization doesn’t expire.

On Xingtu, a creator’s authorization to boost the original video is long-term; an optional flat license fee runs from RMB 20 up to 50% of the task amount. Source: Ocean Engine Xingtu (巨量星图) help center, June 2026. https://www.xingtu.cn/help-center/demander/139122

The creator side can be bought from outside China. Xingtu clears an overseas brand’s paperwork within 24 hours.

Picking and briefing creators is seeding work. That sits with TheRedScroll, the group’s China social media agency (https://www.theredscroll.com). The ad buying, and the numbers behind it, are on our China media page.

The Douyin store: the daily commitment behind the storefront

A foreign brand sells on Douyin through Douyin Global (抖音全球购), the cross-border store format. The paperwork is the easy part.

A Douyin Global store must be opened by a company registered outside mainland China, with an overseas corporate bank account and a mainland domestic agent; a flagship store needs a home-market trademark certificate valid for more than six months. The deposit is small and follows last month’s sales.

Douyin Global’s base deposit is RMB 500 at up to RMB 50,000 of last month’s sales, RMB 2,000 up to RMB 100,000, and RMB 5,000 above that. Source: Douyin E-commerce (抖音电商), Douyin Global deposit rules, June 2025. https://school.jinritemai.com/doudian/web/articlev0/107821

Then the clocks start. Douyin times how fast a store answers chats in Feige, its merchant messaging tool. The average reply has to land in under 90 seconds on chats opened between 8 a.m. and 11 p.m., and a message left unanswered counts as ten minutes.

A store’s average Feige response time must be under 90 seconds, measured on chats opened between 8:00:00 and 22:59:59; an unanswered message counts as 10 minutes. Source: Douyin E-commerce (抖音电商), Feige service rules, January 2026. https://school.jinritemai.com/doudian/web/articlev0/101788

That’s 15 staffed hours a day, or about 450 hours of desk time in a 30-day month, by our arithmetic. And that’s before a box is packed or a camera goes on.

Bonded orders ship within 48 hours of payment, and lateness is charged.

Bonded orders must ship within 48 hours of payment; late shipments are deducted 1% to 5% of the amount paid, with minimums of RMB 2 to RMB 5, and mass violations freeze 15% of the last 15 days’ settlement, at least RMB 1,000, for up to 90 days. Source: Douyin E-commerce (抖音电商), Douyin Global shipping rules, April 2026. https://school.jinritemai.com/doudian/web/articlev0/107820

Refund requests have their own timers, and silence counts as a yes.

Douyin gives merchants 24 hours on pre-shipment refund requests, 36 hours on post-shipment requests, and 48 hours after a return is signed for; on timeout, the system treats the merchant as agreeing. Every one of those timers feeds a merchant experience score, and a low score shuts the store out of Qianchuan.

Douyin Global scores stores from 0 to 100 over 30 days; service weighs 33% for cross-border FMCG and 55% for cross-border health, and a store below the threshold is barred from buying Qianchuan ads. Content is the other daily load. Store livestreams, run by the brand’s own team, now outsell creator livestreams.

The cadence our social commerce team commits to for a store is three to seven livestreams a week, with short videos in between. Creators sell on top of that, on commission.

Douyin creator commissions run from 5% to 50% of the order on open plans and up to 80% on plans set for named creators. Source: Douyin E-commerce (抖音电商), affiliate settlement rules, August 2026. https://school.jinritemai.com/doudian/web/articlev0/112620

Douyin’s own cut is one of the lighter lines: a base technology fee of 2% to 6% by category, plus a supplement on orders that come through the Douyin Mall app and Doubao (ByteDance’s AI assistant, which now sells too).

People cost more than the platform does. At our calculator’s defaults, the operating partner’s retainer is the biggest single line at RMB 360,000 a year, just ahead of RMB 320,000 in creator commission, and the whole store runs at RMB 105,900 a month.

The retainer is what pays for the people who keep those deadlines.

Douyin store vs Douyin ads, side by side

Line Douyin as media Douyin store (Douyin Global)
Setup cost (RMB) Nothing to open. A Xingtu task starts at 10,000 430,000 cash at calculator defaults, 405,000 of it refundable
Monthly operating load Briefs and approvals, no daily clock About 450 staffed chat hours, plus 48-hour shipping and livestream shifts
Content per week About two sponsored posts at the 2024 average spend Three to seven store livestreams, plus short videos
Who has to be in China No one for creator posts. Xingtu reviews overseas entities A mainland domestic agent, a bonded warehouse, a service desk on China hours, hosts
Monthly cost (RMB) 324,000 average creator spend per brand, 2024 105,900 running cost at calculator defaults
Margin after platform fees Douyin takes no cut; the sale lands on Tmall or JD at their fees At calculator defaults, 63.5% of sales goes to running the channel, before product cost
What you keep when you stop The videos, with long-term reuse rights The deposits. Not the store, which can’t be transferred, or its data

The two monthly figures aren’t like for like. The media number is what an average brand chose to spend on creators. The store number is what a store at RMB 2 million of sales costs to run, and a store usually pays creators on top.

Read the exit row twice.

A Douyin Global merchant may not transfer the store or let others use it, data collected by the platform belongs to Douyin, and after exit the merchant can no longer view store information. The three questions that decide it

Who answers Feige at 10 p.m. on a Sunday? Your own team in China, or an operating partner on a retainer. Our calculator’s retainers run from about RMB 30,000 a month for a lean setup to RMB 100,000 for the international-brand tier. If neither exists, you’re buying media.

Then ask where the demand lands. A brand with a Tmall Global or JD Worldwide store can treat Douyin as the shop window and let search finish the sale. A brand with no store anywhere in China has to pick its first one, and the Douyin store is one candidate next to those two.

Does your margin carry the store? Creators, ads, tax, and fees take a fixed share of every sale before the margin pays for the team. So breakeven climbs fast as the margin thins.

At the Douyin calculator’s default settings, breakeven sales are RMB 1.25 million a year at a 75% gross margin, RMB 2.55 million at 60%, and RMB 8.26 million at 50%. Source: TheChinaPath calculator data, September 2026.

The sequence that works: media first, store when the numbers say so

Start with media. Buy a few creator posts through Xingtu, keep the reuse rights, and put a modest ad budget behind the two or three videos that hold attention. Give the test a quarter and a fixed budget, then watch your Tmall or JD search traffic and the comments.

The store comes later. Creators start asking for a cart link, the comments keep asking where to buy, and your sales plan clears breakeven at your margin. Put someone on the Feige desk before launch day.

Open small. A store selling under RMB 50,000 a month posts a RMB 500 deposit, so the platform doesn’t punish a slow start. The clocks don’t scale down, though. The 90-second reply target applies at ten orders a day the same as at a thousand.

If you’d rather not hire, a vetted operating partner is the usual route. Our guide to finding a Douyin partner in China lists seven checks to run before you hand over the account.

Questions brands ask about a Douyin store

Can I sell on Douyin without a Douyin store?

Not through a link of your own. Livestream carts have carried only Douyin store products since October 2020, and creator videos can’t point viewers to Tmall or JD. A creator can still sell your product from a Douyin store authorized to carry your brand. Without any store, Douyin works as media that sends people to search elsewhere.

Does a foreign brand need a Chinese company to open a Douyin store?

The store itself must sit with a company outside mainland China. You also need a mainland company as your domestic agent with customs, and it carries joint civil liability for the declarations. In the setup our calculator models, the operating partner or the bonded warehouse usually takes that role inside its fees.

How much does a Douyin store cost per month?

About RMB 105,900 a month to run at our calculator’s defaults, for RMB 2 million of yearly sales. The retainer, creator commission, and cross-border tax are the largest lines. Setup adds RMB 430,000 in the first year, and RMB 405,000 of that is refundable deposits and tax prepayment.

How much do Douyin ads cost?

Creator posts are the big line: RMB 39,700 per sponsored post on average in 2024, per QuestMobile, and RMB 324,000 a month per brand. A Xingtu task starts at RMB 10,000. Qianchuan plans can start at RMB 100 a day, but Qianchuan only promotes products and livestreams in a Douyin store, so it can’t send traffic to Tmall.
