B2B storytelling in China: proof buyers can use

Build a China B2B case study with buyer evidence. Separate forecasts from results, help distributors qualify inquiries and track progress toward a sale.

A Chinese distributor in a Suzhou showroom checks an industrial product inquiry on a WeChat mini program beside a pump sample.

B2B storytelling in China should help a buyer judge whether your product fits a real project. Start with the customer’s operating problem. Show what changed and the evidence behind the result, then give the local distributor a clear next step. Measure qualified inquiries and sales progress before claiming that a story improved conversion.

Updated October 25, 2026: this article replaces general conversion claims with a sourced industrial example, a buyer-evidence method and a worked sales-qualification calculation.

For a foreign supplier, a story can begin with a maintenance manager’s unanswered question. Can this equipment work on the existing line? Who handles a fault after installation? A founder’s history can wait until the buyer has enough evidence to keep considering the product.

Treat the case study as part of the sales file. It should give a prospect something usable to send to a colleague, and give your distributor a reason to ask about the project. The method below is our recommended workflow, not a claim that Chinese buyers all behave alike.

Start with the buying decision

Choose a particular application before choosing a story. “Manufacturing” is too broad. A replacement pump for a running production line gives you a specific constraint: the buyer needs to know whether a change can happen within the available shutdown window.

The salesperson can start with the question that stalled the last relevant deal. Ask who raised it and what evidence would have answered it. A purchasing manager may need a clear scope of supply. An engineer may need a test report and the conditions under which the test ran.

Build the narrative around that missing evidence. Describe the original operating condition, then explain the change and its outcome. Keep the company history short enough that the application remains easy to find.

Before commissioning a case, involve the local seller and ask who will receive an inquiry and whether that person can arrange a site visit or answer technical questions. Our China distribution service covers partner sourcing and management; those responsibilities need an owner alongside the story.

B2B storytelling in China needs a clear evidence label

A dated Siemens China announcement shows why labels matter. It describes a solar-and-storage project at the company’s SNC factory in Nanjing. The figures below belong to that installation.

Power in kW describes the discharge rate; energy in kWh describes the stored quantity. Keep those units separate when adapting a technical case.

Reported item Value Unit How to read it
Battery storage power 1,860 kW Installed specification
Battery storage energy 5,580 kWh Installed specification
Backup for core loads 3 hours Stated capability for the site’s core loads
Estimated annual electricity-bill reduction 250,000 RMB per year Estimate, not a reported full year of savings

Siemens reported these storage specifications and backup capability for SNC. Its annual electricity-bill saving of about RMB 250,000 was an estimate. Source: Siemens China (西门子中国), April 22, 2025. https://w1.siemens.com.cn/news/news_articles/21857.aspx

Our reading: the useful distinction is between equipment specifications and the expected financial result. The announcement concerns Siemens’ own factory and reports the company’s claims. It is not independent verification or evidence that a different buyer would get the same savings. The estimate is from the 2025 announcement; it is not a 2026 performance update.

For your case, name the site conditions that control the result. An energy saving needs an operating baseline. A throughput claim needs the production mix and observation period. Check that the before and after periods used comparable operating conditions and identify other changes made during the period. If you cannot obtain the underlying record, remove the quantified outcome and explain only what you can document.

Build a case the buyer can check

The working file starts with the customer-approved project description. It should identify where the product was used and which version was installed. Keep a copy of the evidence that supports each claim, including its date and the person who can answer a technical question about it.

When a customer approves a testimonial, confirm exactly what may be used. Approval for a private sales presentation does not tell your team whether the customer also permits a public Chinese page. Get that permission before publishing the name or a recognizable site photograph. Keep the approved text and images with the permission record so that later edits do not silently extend what the customer agreed to.

Keep measured results separate from calculations. A test report describes what happened under its stated conditions. A payback calculation applies assumptions about future use and costs. A chart caption might travel alone.

Keep the correct label in that caption and in the Chinese body copy.

Article 11 of China’s Advertising Law requires cited data and other supporting material in advertising to be truthful, accurate and sourced, with applicable scope and validity periods stated. Article 28 includes unverifiable supporting evidence and invented effects among false-advertising circumstances. Have the product engineer check technical claims and the commercial owner check service promises in the Chinese version before release. A translator cannot repair an unsupported number. If the original author cannot identify the baseline and denominator behind a percentage, it should come out of the sales material.

Make the next sales step concrete

Use the channel your named buyers actually use. For a WeChat inquiry route, test the complete journey on a phone. Can the buyer find the product and understand the offer? Check that the inquiry reaches the person responsible for that territory. Choose a specific action, such as requesting an application review. If a sample test follows, agree the acceptance criteria before sending the sample. WeChat is a route to test with those buyers, not a required channel for every B2B supplier. Send a test inquiry and inspect the actual reply before launch.

Give that salesperson the same approved case the buyer saw. A mismatch between the public promise and the distributor’s proposal creates work at the point when the prospect expects an answer. Include the product reference and version in the inquiry so the response starts with the right equipment. Record the inquiry source. Agree which seller owns an existing account before routing a new inquiry to a different distributor, and set a response time that the seller accepts.

Our published iGuzzini case describes a cross-border Tmall Global store that connected architectural examples with purchase paths for designers and individual buyers. It illustrates how a product story can sit next to a buying route. The page does not isolate the sales effect of any particular story, so it cannot supply a conversion benchmark.

A project sale still needs its own commercial process. A retail checkout does not settle an installation specification or define the warranty work your distributor accepts. Explain those boundaries in the offer, especially when the same brand serves both professional and household buyers. State which locations the promised installation or service covers.

For partner screening, use Compass to frame a shortlist around the required channel and service coverage. Ask candidates to describe how they handle a technical inquiry from receipt to quotation. The seller needs to support the offer its case library describes.

Daily social content and account operations belong with TheRedScroll, the group’s China social media agency. Keep the sales evidence and distributor response under a named commercial owner so that the handoff has a clear boundary.

Track qualified inquiries and meeting costs

Define a qualified inquiry before the campaign starts. For this workflow, count a prospect when the salesperson has confirmed a relevant application, a plausible product fit and a feasible next commercial step. A contact who downloaded a file but has no identified project stays outside that count. Tag existing opportunities separately so the campaign does not claim to have created them.

The following example is hypothetical. It shows how a different number of qualified inquiries changes the cost of reaching a sales conversation. Assume RMB 12,000 of campaign expense in each case. These are editorial inputs, not agency prices or observed client results. The expense covers the assumed production and distribution expense only; it excludes sales-team time and technical visits. Use the same tax basis for both expense totals. Count each company-project pair once, removing duplicate submissions; count held meetings, not bookings.

Illustrative result Campaign A Campaign B
Campaign expense (RMB) 12,000 12,000
Inquiries received 40 40
Qualified inquiries 8 12
Cost per qualified inquiry (RMB) 1,500 1,000
Qualified inquiries with a completed sales meeting 4 4
Cost per sales meeting (RMB) 3,000 3,000

Cost per qualified inquiry is campaign expense divided by qualified inquiries: RMB 12,000 / 8 = RMB 1,500. Apply the same formula to completed meetings.

Campaign B has a lower cost per qualified inquiry. Both campaigns have the same cost per meeting. This example does not select a winner. Examine the handoff and the qualification rule before increasing spend.

It does not establish that the story caused the difference. A different buyer mix can change the result. So can the traffic source or the salesperson’s follow-up. Keep the comparison period and qualification definition consistent, then record those differences alongside the counts. Give each group the same time to reach a meeting. These small invented counts demonstrate the calculation; they provide no statistical evidence of an effect.

Follow the inquiry through to the quotation and eventual order. Record a lost deal’s reason when the buyer gives one; leave the reason unknown when the buyer has not explained it. “No local service coverage” suggests a distribution problem that a better case-study headline will not resolve. Use the finding to change the offer or the partner brief.

Keep the evidence usable after launch

Keep the approved Chinese version with its source records and revision date. Someone in the commercial team needs to own that file. When a product specification changes, that owner can identify which distributor files and public claims depend on the old version. Withdraw a claim when its supporting evidence no longer applies, and replace the distributor copy.

Ask the local team to bring back the questions the case failed to answer. If several prospects ask about the same installation condition, add the missing technical explanation after an engineer checks it. If the inquiry route fails, repair it before buying more traffic.

For the first review, read the actual inquiries beside the case and check what the salesperson sent back. Look for unanswered technical questions before asking the writer to produce another case.

FAQ

Can a foreign case study work before we have a China customer?

Use it with its location clearly stated. Explain which application conditions are relevant to the proposed China project and which still need checking. Keep overseas service arrangements separate from the support you can provide locally. A foreign reference can support a technical conversation; describe it accurately as an overseas reference.

Do we need to name the customer?

A named, approved reference gives the buyer a way to check context. If the customer refuses public identification, describe the application only as far as permission allows. Keep the supporting records internally and offer a permitted, redacted technical report when available. Do not add details that expose the customer indirectly, or invent a composite customer and present it as a real project.

Should every B2B case send buyers to a store?

Choose the next action to fit the purchase. A defined replacement item may have a suitable checkout route. A configured system may need technical review and a quotation. Test that route with the distributor before release, and make the response owner clear. The case should lead to an action the business can actually fulfill. A request for a project quotation must reach the project-sales team, including inquiries from retail pages.

How quickly should the story produce a sale?

Use your own comparable deal history to set a review window. This article does not provide a China-wide sales-cycle benchmark. During the review, separate early inquiries from opportunities with a confirmed next step. Record when those opportunities move or stall, and avoid attributing an existing late-stage deal to a newly published story.

Request a China partner shortlist for the channel and technical coverage your buyers need.
