Douyin affiliate commission: what a brand really pays creators

Douyin affiliate commission runs 5% to 80% of each kept sale, and big hosts add a slot fee that returns don't refund. How to price both per kept order.

In a Linyi livestream base, a host holds a skincare bottle up to a phone on a tripod while a colleague checks Douyin creator orders on a laptop.

Douyin affiliate commission is what a brand pays a creator on each sale that sticks. The brand sets the rate: 5% to 50% for any creator, up to 80% for creators it picks. Bigger hosts also charge a slot fee for airtime, and returns don’t touch it. Your Douyin Partner books both, so judge every creator on cost per kept order.

Douyin is China’s short-video app, and creators sell on it through live rooms and videos. The marketplace that matches them with products is Douyin’s affiliate program, Jingxuan Lianmeng (精选联盟). Foreign brands selling cross-border through Douyin Global use the same program and the same rules.

The agency that runs a brand’s Douyin shop is called a Douyin Partner (DP). It usually finds the creators and haggles over their terms. The brand pays.

That bill adds up fast. At the defaults in our Douyin calculator, RMB 2 million of first-year sales with 80% of it moved by creators at 20% commission, creator commission comes to RMB 320,000, about US$45,000 at our planning rate of RMB 7.10 to the dollar. That’s 16% of sales, or RMB 50 on every creator order (TheChinaPath calculator data, October 2026). Every third-party figure below was checked on October 18, 2026.

Creator deals come in six shapes, and they put the risk in very different places.

How Douyin grades creators

The trade talks about head and mid-tier creators. Douyin keeps its own ladder, and it grades creators on sales that stayed sold.

Douyin sets creator levels L0 to L6 on the 8th of each month from the previous month’s settled sales, meaning paid sales minus refunds made within seven days. L3 starts above RMB 300,000 a month, L5 above RMB 3 million, L6 at RMB 10 million and up. Ask for the level of every creator your DP proposes. It’s the platform’s own read of how much a creator sells after refunds, and it’s harder to dress up than a follower count.

Douyin affiliate commission: the rates a brand can set

The brand sets the rate in its affiliate backend, product by product. Douyin sets the floor and the ceiling.

An open commission offer to all creators can run from 5% to 50% of the order. An offer limited to named creators, tiered offers included, can run from 5% to 80%. In a group-leader plan, the creator’s rate and the leader’s service fee together can reach 90%. Group leaders, tuanzhang (团长) in the trade, are middlemen who take a brand’s product and push it to the creators they work with. The leader’s fee comes on top of the creator’s commission, and the brand pays both. A DP that works through leaders should name each one and its fee in the monthly report.

The creator also pays Douyin a cut (the platform calls it a technical service fee): 10% of the commission for creators rated A, B+ or B, 20% at C and 40% at D. That comes out of the creator’s side, though a creator rated D keeps only 60% of the rate you set.

Commission is paid on kept sales. Douyin settles it 15 days after the buyer confirms receipt, and a refund inside the after-sale window cancels it. The base leaves out shipping, and on a cross-border order import tax as well.

So a returned order costs the brand no commission. It still costs the slot fee.

Slot fees: what the money buys

A slot fee, kengweifei (坑位费) in Chinese, pays for a product’s place in a host’s live session. It’s priced on the host’s pull, before a single unit sells.

A brand told Xinhua that in its past deals, a dedicated session with a top host cost about RMB 1 million to 3 million, and one with a mid-tier host RMB 500,000 to 1 million. Source: Xinhua (新华网), August 4, 2024. https://www.news.cn/fortune/20240804/ec11b5b85b514e8b9332998d0b23b020/c.html

That’s about US$141,000 to US$423,000 for a top host’s night. Commission comes on top, and the biggest names in Chinese live commerce set it high.

Industry insiders told China Entrepreneur that top hosts take 30% to 40% commission from beauty brands, less from international majors and more than 40% from some smaller domestic brands, with a slot fee charged separately. Mid-tier hosts charge smaller slot fees. Ebrun found the all-in bill runs high anyway.

Working with mid-tier creators and above, merchants should expect slot fees, commission and ad budget to come to at least 35% of the sales those creators make, and some merchants reported more than 50%. One merchant said big hosts rarely take less than 20% commission and ask for the lowest price in writing. Douyin has its own rule for slot fees. A creator who charges one must collect it through the platform.

A creator who charges a service fee, the slot fee, for a livestream must collect it through the affiliate program’s cooperation-order tool. The fee can be pro rata: with RMB 500,000 of agreed settled sales and a RMB 10,000 fee, a creator who settles RMB 100,000 gets RMB 2,000. Or it can be flat: paid in full if the creator goes live, refunded if not, whatever sells. The pro-rata version turns a slot fee into something close to a commission on settled sales. Ask for it. A flat fee is a bet on the host.

When a slot-fee deal goes wrong, the contract is all a brand has. Two Beijing court cases show what the money bought. Neither report names the platform.

In a Beijing case, a brand paid RMB 40,000 a product for five products, RMB 200,000 in slot fees, against a written guarantee of RMB 50,000 in sales per product. The session sold less than RMB 4,000. The court ordered RMB 160,000 refunded, trimmed because the brand’s script was late and thin. In another Beijing case, a brand paid a RMB 45,000 slot fee and a RMB 15,000 deposit for 8 to 10 minutes on air, under a contract that excused the agency from any sales shortfall. The session ran short and without a co-host. The court set damages at RMB 9,000. The brand had asked for the whole fee back. In the first case the sales guarantee was written into the contract. In the second, the contract had waived it.

Cost per kept order: the number to ask for

A slot fee needs volume before it pays its way, and returns eat the volume.

Take our calculator’s defaults again: a RMB 250 order and 20% commission, so RMB 50 a kept order. Add the RMB 45,000 slot fee from the second Beijing case.

Kept orders from the session Slot fee per kept order, RMB Commission per kept order, RMB Total per kept order, RMB Share of a RMB 250 order
300 150.00 50.00 200.00 80%
600 75.00 50.00 125.00 50%
900 50.00 50.00 100.00 40%
2,000 22.50 50.00 72.50 29%

TheChinaPath calculator data, October 2026 (RMB 250 order, 20% commission), with the RMB 45,000 fee from the Beijing case. The session volumes are illustrations.

At 900 kept orders the slot fee costs as much as the commission itself. That’s RMB 225,000 of sales that have to survive the return window. Below that, the fee costs more per kept order than the commission does.

Returns move the line. A session that places 1,000 orders and loses 30% of them keeps 700, at about RMB 114 each.

What to ask your Douyin Partner

A DP books creators on your money, so set the terms before the first booking.

  • Book every slot fee on Douyin. The cooperation order puts the fee and the live date on the platform record, along with any sales floor. A private invoice from the DP or a talent agency leaves no such record.
  • Prefer pro-rata fees. Tie the fee to settled sales, with Douyin’s own formula, and keep flat fees for hosts you’d pay for reach alone.
  • Get a monthly creator report. One row per creator: level, commission rate, slot fee, group-leader fee, orders placed, orders kept and cost per kept order.
  • Name the group leaders. Every leader and every fee, in writing.

Our guide to finding a Douyin Partner covers the checks to run before you sign, and Compass holds the DPs we have watched book creators in our categories.

Before any of that, run your own numbers. The Douyin cost calculator shows what your creator share and commission rate do to the year. Our social commerce page lists the rest of the work a Douyin channel needs.

Paying creators per post to build awareness, rather than per sale, is a separate budget. TheRedScroll, the group’s China social media agency, handles that side.

Frequently asked questions

What commission do Douyin creators charge?

The brand sets it. Douyin allows 5% to 50% on an offer open to every creator and 5% to 80% for creators the brand names. Top hosts expect 20% or more, one merchant says, and 30% to 40% in beauty according to industry insiders, plus a slot fee. Commission is cancelled on orders refunded in the after-sale period.

Is a slot fee refunded if the session doesn’t sell?

Only if the deal says so. Under Douyin’s cooperation-order tool, a flat fee comes back only if the creator never goes live, and a pro-rata fee shrinks with settled sales. Off the platform it’s down to the contract: a Beijing court ordered RMB 160,000 of a RMB 200,000 fee paid back because sales were guaranteed in writing.

Who pays the group leader?

The brand. In a group-leader plan the brand sets both the creator’s commission and the leader’s service fee, and Douyin caps the two together at 90% of the order. The leader pays Douyin 10% of its fee. Ask your DP to name every leader it uses and the fee each one takes.

Is a pure-commission creator always cheaper?

At the same rate, yes, per kept order. A pure-commission creator costs the rate you set, RMB 50 on a RMB 250 order at 20%, and nothing on returns. A slot-fee host costs that plus the fee spread over its kept orders. With a RMB 45,000 fee, a kept order costs at least double the commission until the session keeps 900 orders. Big hosts can still earn the fee as reach on a launch.
