A foreign car or EV brand can’t sell a vehicle in China through Tmall Global or any other cross-border store. Cars aren’t on the import list. Buyers find the car on Douyin, Xiaohongshu (RedNote), and the car portals, and a dealer or brand store closes the sale. Your job is to get qualified leads into that salesperson’s WeChat, fast.
So for a carmaker, China is a demand and handoff problem. The marketplace playbook written for skincare or snacks assumes a product page and a checkout. A car has neither. It has a research cycle measured in months, a showroom visit, and a salesperson who works the buyer on WeChat until the deposit lands.
The market a newcomer walks into is shrinking at home. It has also gone electric.

Monthly figures divide the published annual fee by 12. Every figure was checked against its source in October 2026, and the sources follow.
The portals are where buyers compare trims and transaction prices. Dealers pay most of that bill, and they’re paying less.

Dongchedi is the newer portal, and its users sit inside ByteDance’s wider traffic. The trade press measures its bill per car sold.

Douyin now produces the volume. Dealers run their own accounts and livestreams, and the ad budget decides how many leads come back.
Douyin had more than 30,200 active car dealer stores in 2025, a regional head of the joint Douyin and Dongchedi dealer business said. WeChat is where the sale gets worked. The lead lands in a salesperson’s contact list and stays with that person, unless the dealer contract says the brand sees it too. Tencent’s own video feed now sends buyers to the showroom as well.

The 4S dealership (sales, service, parts, and surveys under one roof) is still the backbone of car retail in China. It’s churning, though.

Why there’s no cross-border route for a car
China’s cross-border retail import list names every product a shopper can buy from abroad through Tmall Global, JD Worldwide, or a Douyin cross-border store. Cars aren’t on it.
The 2019 cross-border retail import list, in force from January 1, 2020, runs to 1,413 tariff lines. In chapter 87 (vehicles) it names only bicycles, wheelchairs, and baby carriages. The price caps would rule a car out anyway.

So an imported car comes in through general trade. It needs China Compulsory Certification (CCC) before it can be sold, and it pays import duty.

Imports are a shrinking slice of the market. Since 2022 a foreign carmaker can own its Chinese factory outright, and building locally takes the duty out of the price.

Douyin’s own store can’t move the metal either.

The dealer rules matter just as much. Under the Ministry of Commerce’s 2017 car sales measures, a carmaker can’t stop its dealers selling other brands. It also can’t sell direct to consumers inside a dealer’s territory unless the contract allows it, so write the direct-sales carve-out into the dealer contract on day one.

What a qualified lead costs, and how long a sale takes
Lead prices are climbing on Douyin, and fake leads are getting harder to pass off.

Since September 1, dealers on the Douyin and Dongchedi lead tools can’t type a buyer’s WeChat ID in by hand, and a buyer leaving details in a live room has to enter an SMS code.

The portals look cheap per raw lead, at least on Autohome’s own math from 2019. Per car sold, the bill is higher, and Dongchedi’s was set to double in a year.

The verdict: fund the leads yourself, and own the handoff
Don’t expect dealers to pay for a new brand’s demand. Most can’t.

Here’s the order we’d plan in. Douyin lead ads and RedNote search content come first, paid by the brand, because that’s where buyers build a shortlist. The portals follow, bought through dealers once they’re signed. A show is for a launch moment and not much else. And every dealer signs one rule: leads get answered on WeChat the same day, with the outcome logged where the brand can see it. Paid reach on these platforms is what our media team buys.
Count leads the way Douyin now counts them. Since the September rule, ask dealers and agencies for SMS-verified leads and the share that reached a test drive. A raw form fill tells you very little.
Direct stores are an option, too, and EV makers lean on them.

What our automotive work shows, and what it doesn’t
Our China-side car work is social. We’ve run a year-round program in China for Jaguar Land Rover, and an annual one for JAC Automobile on WeChat, RedNote and Weibo. Neither case page publishes a lead or sales figure, so we don’t quote one here.
The published number closest to the dealer handoff comes from production. For JAC’s EV launch we shot more than 250 exterior and interior images for its international partner and reseller network (published case figure, JAC global asset production). A dealer sells from the brand’s pictures. Give every dealer the same library, or each one makes its own.
Where to start
A launch plan for a car brand starts with the dealer contract and the lead route. The media comes after. Sign the first dealers before the ad budget moves, because in a two-and-a-half-month cycle a lead with no showroom behind it goes cold. That’s the order a China campaign plan follows. The work is project-based and quoted after the first call.
FAQ
Can a foreign car brand sell on Tmall Global or a Douyin store?
No. Cars are not on the cross-border retail import list, and a car breaks the 5,000 RMB per-order cap anyway. Douyin’s car categories are invitation only, for carmakers and authorized dealers, and they sell a voucher the buyer redeems in store. The vehicle itself is imported through general trade or built locally, then sold in a showroom.
How long does a Chinese car buyer take to decide?
About 2.5 months from first browsing to order, according to Autohome’s research arm in March 2026. Once the buyer is in a salesperson’s WeChat, speed matters. J.D. Power found that consultants who follow up the same day close a 25.6% higher share of deals within a week than those who wait a day.
Do I need dealers, or can I sell direct?
Either can work. Direct and agency stores now make up more than half of the outlets that sell cars in China’s independent new-energy networks. If you do sign dealers, the 2017 car sales measures stop you selling direct inside their territory unless the contract allows it. Put that carve-out in writing before launch.
