This is how to sell home and kitchen products in China as a foreign brand, to Chinese shoppers. The fastest way in is a cross-border store on Tmall Global or JD Worldwide. Soft goods and unpowered kitchenware go through cheaply. A plug or a food-contact surface adds certification and testing, and that load is what usually pushes a range into general trade.
So the first job is sorting your range into three piles: things with a plug, things that touch food, and things that do neither. A cast iron pan touches food. A kettle does both. A linen throw does neither, and it’s the easiest kind of product to ship to China.
The table below sorts ten sub-categories that way. The weights are our working bands for a boxed retail unit, not a sourced statistic. Treat the compliance column as a checklist: confirm each item against the issuing body’s current text before you list.
| Sub-category | Shipped weight, illustrative | Cross-border viable | Verify before listing (issuing body) | Best first channel |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Cookware and bakeware | 1.5 to 5 kg, dense | Yes | Food contact: GB 4806.1 plus the metal, enamel or coating part (NHC) | Tmall Global |
| Knives and cutting boards | 0.3 to 1.5 kg | Yes | Food contact: metal, wood or bamboo surfaces (NHC) | Tmall Global |
| Food storage | 0.5 to 2 kg, bulky | Yes | Food contact: plastic or glass part standard (NHC) | JD Worldwide |
| Small kitchen appliances | 2 to 6 kg, bulky | Conditional | CCC catalogue line for each product (SAMR); food contact for inner parts (NHC); plug and voltage | JD Worldwide |
| Coffee and tea equipment | 0.5 to 4 kg | Conditional | Unpowered: food contact (NHC). Powered: CCC liquid heater line (SAMR) | Tmall Global |
| Tableware and drinkware | 1 to 4 kg, fragile | Yes | Food contact: ceramic or glass part standard (NHC) | Tmall Global |
| Bedding and textiles | 0.4 to 3 kg, light | Yes | Textile safety code GB 18401 (SAMR); Chinese label in general trade | Tmall Global |
| Bath | 0.3 to 2 kg, light | Yes | Towels under GB 18401 (SAMR); Chinese label in general trade | Tmall Global |
| Storage and organization | 1 to 8 kg, bulky | Yes, thin margins | Food contact if it holds food (NHC); Chinese label in general trade | JD Worldwide |
| Decor | 0.5 to 5 kg, fragile | Yes | CCC if it is a mains-powered lamp (SAMR); Chinese label in general trade | Tmall Global |
“Cross-border viable” means the product family appears on China’s cross-border retail import list and needs no first-import registration. “Conditional” means the plug question has to be settled first. Sources for every column are cited in the sections below, checked November 5, 2026.
If you came here to buy from China, this is the wrong page
Search for “sell home kitchen products China” and many of the results are about sourcing: finding a factory in Guangdong, shipping containers to Europe. This page goes the other way. It’s for a brand made outside China, selling into Chinese homes, through Chinese stores.
That direction has its own rules, and every one below comes from a Chinese regulator or a platform’s own rule page. We rechecked all of them on November 5, 2026.
The four home and kitchen brands that work in China, and the ones that don’t
Four profiles do well cross-border.
The heritage cookware brand. A cast iron, copper or enamel maker with a country-of-origin story. The product is heavy and expensive, so a fixed parcel cost hardly moves its margin.
The design-led tableware and drinkware brand. Ceramics, glass and flatware with a recognizable look. It photographs well, which matters on platforms that sell through feeds and livestreams.
The textile and bath brand. Linen, towels and bedding. Nothing plugs in, nothing touches food, and the parcels are light. The textile safety code, plus a Chinese label once the goods go general trade, is the whole compliance file.
The specialist appliance brand. One hero product (an espresso machine, a stand mixer) with a following abroad. It works, but only after the certification question is answered, and that can take months.
What struggles: commodity storage boxes, plain basics and anything bulky and cheap. A plastic organizer that sells for 60 RMB pays the same pick-and-pack and delivery as a 1,200 RMB pan, and domestic brands fight hard on that shelf.
Where the category splits: plug, food contact, or neither
The plug
China’s compulsory product certification, known as CCC, applies before a listed product can be sold or imported. The catalogue is specific. It doesn’t say “small appliances.” It names products, one line at a time.
Products in the CCC catalogue must be certified and carry the certification mark before they leave the factory, are sold or are imported. Source: State Administration for Market Regulation (市场监管总局), Compulsory Product Certification Management Provisions, as revised by Decree 61, 2022. https://www.samr.gov.cn/zw/zfxxgk/fdzdgknr/fgs/art/2023/art_1fb2082e0cca45cbb8e70b4a33e15e99.html
Three common kitchen appliances sit on three different lines, which is why “verify each product” is the only safe instruction.
| Product | CCC catalogue line (code) | What the line covers |
|---|---|---|
| Kettle, coffee pot | 35, liquid heaters (0717) | Electric kettles, tea kettles, coffee pots, egg cookers, rated up to 250 V |
| Air fryer | 30, portable ovens and similar (0712) | Toasters, ovens, bread makers and air fryers, up to 250 V and 10 L |
| Blender, coffee grinder | 31, food processing appliances (0713) | Mixers, blenders, juicers, grinders, coffee grinders up to 500 g |
The 2023 scope table lists air fryers under item 30 (code 0712), blenders and coffee grinders under item 31 (0713), and electric kettles and coffee pots under item 35 (0717), each for appliances rated up to 250 V. Source: State Administration for Market Regulation (市场监管总局), Compulsory Product Certification Catalogue Description and Definition Table, 2023 revision, annex 2, September 2023. https://www.cnca.gov.cn/zwxx/gg/zjgg/art/2023/art_31ce43f5837d408cb2023ec693615ada.html
Each line carries its own test standards, so a kettle certificate does nothing for your air fryer. Check the line, then check the product against its exclusions (commercial models, for instance, sit outside most of them).
The plug and the voltage come next. A product built for the North American supply needs a China version, rated for the local supply and fitted with the local plug. China’s reference for supply voltages is the national standard GB/T 156-2017.
GB/T 156-2017, Standard voltages, a recommended national standard, was issued November 1, 2017 and took effect May 1, 2018. It is current. Source: State Administration for Market Regulation (市场监管总局), national standards register, accessed November 2026. https://std.samr.gov.cn/gb/search/gbDetailed?id=71F772D82246D3A7E05397BE0A0AB82A
One gap. We found no regulator text that says whether CCC binds goods sold through bonded cross-border retail. Don’t assume it doesn’t. Get your bonded warehouse’s position in writing before a powered product is listed.
Food contact
The second gate is anything that touches food. China’s Food Safety Law covers food packaging, containers, tools and equipment, which it calls food-related products. And it is blunt about imports.
Imported food, food additives and food-related products must meet China’s national food safety standards. Source: National People’s Congress (全国人大), Food Safety Law, article 92, as amended September 12, 2025, via the Ministry of Commerce policy database. https://policy.mofcom.gov.cn/claw/clawContent.shtml?id=104105
The standards themselves come as a family. A general rule, GB 4806.1, sits on top. Under it, separate standards cover enamel, ceramics, glass, plastics, paper, metal, coatings and rubber.
GB 4806.1-2016 sets the general safety requirements for food contact materials and articles, published with part standards for enamel (GB 4806.3), ceramic (4806.4), glass (4806.5), plastic (4806.7), paper (4806.8), metal (4806.9), coatings (4806.10) and rubber (4806.11). So a nonstick pan has two files, metal and coating. An enamel casserole with a glass lid has two more. Your test lab report should name each part standard the product touches.
Neither
Textiles, bath linen, decor and empty storage pieces skip both gates. Their file is the textile safety code (for anything woven) and, once they go through general trade, a Chinese label. Cross-border goods may ship without one.
GB 18401-2010, the national general safety code for textile products, is mandatory and current; it grades products A (infant), B (skin contact) and C (no skin contact). What it costs to sell home and kitchen products in China: the fee sheet
The split shows up in platform fees too. On Tmall Global, the plug sits on the cheaper side.
| Platform | Deposit, RMB | Annual fee, RMB | Commission: cookware and tableware | Commission: kitchen appliances | Rule checked |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Tmall Global | 50,000 | 60,000 cookware; 30,000 appliances | 5% | 2% | Nov 5, 2026 |
| JD Worldwide | 21,300 cookware (US$3,000); 35,500 appliances (US$5,000) | None | 4% plus 0.9% per order | 3% plus 0.9% per order | Nov 5, 2026 |
| Douyin cross-border | 500 to 5,000, by last month’s sales | None | 6%, plus 4% on set channels | 3%, plus 3.9% on set channels | Nov 5, 2026 |

JD Worldwide charges cookware 4.00% plus a 0.90% transaction fee with a US$3,000 flagship deposit, and household appliances 3.00% plus 0.90% with US$5,000. Its fee standard lists no annual fee. Douyin’s cross-border store charges tableware and cookware 6% with a 4% channel supplement, and appliances outside the named lines 3% with 3.9%. Its base deposit is 500, 2,000 or 5,000 RMB, set by the previous month’s sales. Now the number only we can publish. We ran our Tmall Global calculator at its default year (3.5 million RMB in sales, a 250 RMB average order, a Tmall Partner on a 35,000 RMB monthly retainer) twice: once on the home and kitchenware row, once on the kitchen and household appliances row.
The cookware store pays 235,000 RMB in commission and annual fee; the appliance store pays 100,000 RMB. Total cash out in year one is 2,947,900 RMB against 2,812,900, of which 450,000 RMB comes back in both cases. On JD Worldwide the same year costs 171,500 RMB in commission and transaction fees for cookware and 136,500 RMB for appliances. Source: TheChinaPath calculator data, November 2026: four category rows across our Tmall Global and JD Worldwide calculators, one default scenario, not results from a named store.
That 135,000 RMB gap on Tmall Global is real money. Still, the cheap row comes after a certification file the cookware brand never needs, so it doesn’t make appliances the easy start.
What it costs to land a 2kg cookware set versus a 400g textile item
Take two orders. A 2 kg stainless cookware set at 1,200 RMB, and a 400 g linen tea towel set at 200 RMB. Both prices are our assumptions. Both products sit on the cross-border list (stainless kitchenware under 73239300, cotton kitchen towels under 63026090).
The 2019 cross-border retail import list includes stainless steel kitchen and table ware (73239300), cotton toilet and kitchen linen (63026090), porcelain and pottery tableware, glassware, knives, blenders (85094090), rice cookers (85166030), ovens (85166050) and coffee machines. Neither product carries consumption tax, so both pay the general cross-border rate: 13% VAT, charged at 70%, or 9.1% of the price.

| Per order, Tmall Global, RMB | 2 kg cookware set | 400 g tea towel set |
|---|---|---|
| Retail price | 1,200 | 200 |
| Cross-border tax at 9.1%, paid by the shopper | 109.20 | 18.20 |
| Commission (5%) and Alipay fee (1%) | 72.00 | 12.00 |
| Storage, pick and pack, delivery, returns | 17.35 | 17.35 |
| Brand-side cost per order | 89.35 | 29.35 |
| As a share of the price | 7.4% | 14.7% |
TheChinaPath calculator data, November 2026: per-order logistics are our Tmall Global calculator’s defaults (0.8 RMB storage for two months, 4 RMB pick and pack, 11 RMB delivery, 15 RMB handling on 5% of orders).
The light item pays twice the share. That’s the textile trap: the parcel costs about the same whatever is inside it, so cheap soft goods need a bigger basket (a set, a bundle) to carry it.
The heavy item has the reverse problem. Our default hides it. The 11 RMB delivery line is priced for an ordinary parcel. A 2 kg boxed set, or a 4 kg Dutch oven, costs more to pack and deliver, and more to get into the bonded warehouse in the first place. Get the warehouse’s weight-band quote before you set the price.
Then there’s the ceiling. A shopper can spend 5,000 RMB per cross-border order and 26,000 RMB a year.
The single-transaction limit is 5,000 RMB and the annual limit 26,000 RMB, from January 1, 2019. Source: Ministry of Commerce (商务部) policy database, 财关税〔2018〕49号, November 2018. https://policy.mofcom.gov.cn/claw/clawContent.shtml?id=65769
A premium copper set priced above 5,000 RMB can still go through if it’s the only item in the order, but it then pays duty, VAT and consumption tax in full, at general goods rates.
A single indivisible item above the 5,000 RMB limit but within the annual limit may enter as a cross-border retail import, with duty, import VAT and consumption tax charged in full at goods rates. Cross-border first, general trade when volume justifies it
Cross-border retail is the light way in because the goods are treated as the shopper’s personal imports.
Cross-border retail imports are supervised as personal-use goods, with no first-import permit, registration or filing requirement. Source: Ministry of Commerce and five other bodies (商务部等六部门), 商财发〔2018〕486号, November 2018. https://www.gov.cn/zhengce/zhengceku/2018-12/31/content_5437823.htm
That buys a home and kitchen brand a year of real sales data before it commits to anything heavier. Which pans sell, and at what price.
General trade is the step after. The goods clear as ordinary imports and can go to any retailer, online or off. In return, the border asks for the full file: the CCC mark on every catalogue product and a Chinese label on every unit. The food-contact standards applied all along.
When does it pay? When a distributor or a domestic flagship wants volume the cross-border limits can’t carry, or when an offline buyer (a department store, a homeware chain) asks for stock. At that point the distributor sourcing and management work starts, and a vetted partner list from Compass can save months of searching.
We have no published client case in home and kitchen to point to. The figures on this page come from regulators, platform rules and our own calculators, nothing else.
What a home and kitchen storefront needs before day one
The list is short. Every item on it takes longer than it looks.
- A trademark the platform will accept. On Tmall Global an unregistered (TM) mark raises the flagship deposit to 100,000 RMB.
- Test reports by part. For each food-contact product, a lab report that names the GB 4806 part standards it meets.
- The CCC answer for every powered product, product by product, plus the bonded warehouse’s written position.
- Chinese product pages that answer size questions. Pan diameters in centimeters. Induction compatibility, stated plainly.
- An after-sales plan for anything with a plug. Who repairs it, and how fast.
- Bundles for light goods, so the basket carries the parcel cost.
The cross-border store setup covers the store and the bonded warehouse in one sequence.
A flagship or specialty store whose brand is an unregistered (TM) mark pays a base deposit of 100,000 RMB on Tmall Global. Source: Tmall Global (天猫国际), Platform Deposit Rules (天猫国际平台保证金规则), in force May 12, 2026. https://rule.tmall.hk/?type=detail&ruleId=8942&cId=625
The order the channels should go in
Tmall Global first for a brand-led range. Cookware, tableware, textiles and decor sell on the story and the brand page, and Tmall Global is built for that. The fee row is the most expensive of the three for unpowered goods. Pay it anyway.
JD Worldwide first where delivery speed and appliance credibility matter more than storytelling. Appliance buyers care about delivery and after-sales more than a brand film, in our reading of the category, and the JD fee row for appliances is low. The same logic covers everyday functional pieces like food storage. A specialist appliance brand can reasonably open there and add Tmall Global in year two.
Douyin after the store has reviews. Its deposit is the lowest of the three and its commission on cookware the highest, even before the channel supplement. It sells through livestreams and short video, which suits heavy, visual products like cast iron, once the brand has a store page to send shoppers back to.
General trade comes when one partner can take volume. Not before.
FAQ
Can I sell kitchen appliances in China without CCC certification?
Not through general trade. CCC applies before a catalogue product is sold or imported, and kettles, air fryers and blenders each sit on a catalogue line. For bonded cross-border retail we found no regulator text that settles the question either way, so treat certification as the safe default and get your bonded warehouse’s written position.
Do cookware and tableware need testing to sell in China?
They have to meet China’s standards, and a lab report is how a brand shows it. Article 92 of the Food Safety Law says imported food-related products, which include containers and tools that touch food, must meet the national food safety standards: the GB 4806 family, a general rule plus parts for metal, ceramic, glass, plastic, coatings and rubber.
Which platform is cheapest for a home and kitchen brand?
It depends on the plug. On Tmall Global, unpowered cookware pays 5% and a 60,000 RMB annual fee, appliances 2% and 30,000 RMB. JD Worldwide charges no annual fee and 4% or 3% plus 0.9% per order. Douyin’s deposit starts at 500 RMB, with commission of 6% on cookware.
Is there a price limit for selling home goods cross-border?
Yes. A shopper can spend 5,000 RMB per order and 26,000 RMB a year through cross-border retail. A single item priced above 5,000 RMB can still enter alone, but it pays duty, VAT and consumption tax in full at general goods rates, which usually ends the price advantage.
