WordPress and Elementor behind the firewall: migrating Bassetti's website to China

Bassetti’s international site ran on WordPress and Elementor, and most of it stalled at the Great Firewall. We kept the stack, rebuilt what sat under it, and had the Chinese site live within weeks.

The problem Why a copy fails

A copy of the site wouldn’t load in China

Bassetti Group is a European leader in digital transformation. Its innovation management software helps manufacturers run their processes better, and the team wanted to reach Chinese buyers directly.

On paper, the job was to duplicate the website in Chinese. In practice, China’s internet works differently. Western hosting, Google services and common APIs either crawl or fail behind the Great Firewall.

So the Chinese site had to be rebuilt from the ground up, even if it looked the same from the outside.

What breaks behind the firewall

Hosting abroad

A site served from outside mainland China loads slowly there, if it loads at all.

Google services

Google Fonts and Google Analytics run into the firewall. A page waiting on them hangs.

Foreign APIs

Any third-party call to a server outside China is a point where the page can stall.

No license, no hosting

A site hosted in mainland China needs an ICP license before it can go live.

Compliance Domain and ICP

Paperwork first, code second

We started with compliance and infrastructure, because nothing else can ship without them.

  1. Domain

    Register the .cn domain

A Chinese domain for the Chinese site, sorted out alongside the license.

  2. License

    Apply for the ICP license

The Internet Content Provider license is mandatory for any site hosted in mainland China. Think of it as the site’s passport: the government reviews the business credentials and the content plans.

  3. Hosting

    Move to China-based cloud hosting

The site now runs from servers inside China, close to the people visiting it.

The audit Every call checked

If it called outside China, it went

WordPress and Elementor stayed. Everything underneath got checked, one plugin, script and dependency at a time.

Google Fonts

Swapped for fonts that load from inside China.

Google Analytics

Replaced with local analytics tools.

Third-party APIs

Relocated to China, or taken out where they weren’t needed.

Plugins and scripts

Reviewed one by one. Anything reaching across the border was removed or replaced.

Live The result

Live within weeks, and quick to load

The Chinese site launched within weeks. It loads fast, nothing times out waiting on Google, and Chinese visitors get the same smooth experience Europeans get on the international site.

Compliance

ICP

Fully compliant with Chinese internet rules

Licensed and hosted in mainland China.

Performance

Fast

Ahead of many locally built competitors

China browses on mobile first, so the speed from the technical cleanup counts there most.

What carries over

Start the ICP early

The license involves a government review. Everything else waits on it, so it goes first.

Audit every outbound call

One forgotten script pointing at Google can hold a whole page hostage.

Keep the stack you know

The team still edits in WordPress and Elementor. Only the foundations changed.
