Building a design-driven community on Chinese social media
A Mallorca shoemaker with a strong point of view, three Chinese platforms, and 18 months of content built around craft instead of discounts. The follower base went from 43,000 to 187,000.

Since 1975 The brand
A shoe brand with opinions, in a feed full of promotions
Camper was founded in Mallorca in 1975. It made its name on odd, comfortable shoes and Mediterranean craft, and on a motto it still prints everywhere: “walk, don’t run.”
The people who buy it in China are design-literate professionals aged 28 to 45. They’ve seen every flash sale there is. What they look for is a brand that thinks something.
So the brief was bigger than reach. Camper needed to grow on WeChat, Weibo, and RedNote without sounding like every other shoe account.
What stood in the way
Promotion noise
Footwear feeds in China run on seasonal deals. A discount post would have looked like everyone else’s.
A design identity to protect
Camper’s creative DNA had to survive translation. Local content couldn’t flatten it into generic lifestyle shots.
A skeptical audience
Design-minded buyers in their 30s and 40s scroll past hard sells. They respond to a point of view.
Three platforms, three habits
WeChat reads long, Weibo argues in public, RedNote searches for proof. One post couldn’t do all three jobs.
The plan Content pillars
Talk about the shoes the way the designers do
We dropped the promotional calendar and built every post on one of three content pillars. Each platform then got the format its users already trust.
What every post was built on
- Stories behind iconic designs
- Artist collaborations
- Real customers in Shanghai, Beijing, and Guangzhou
Seasonal promotions stayed out of the plan. Craft stories and artist collaborations did the selling.

One brand, a different job on each platform
We partnered with micro-influencers from architecture and design. Their notes read like recommendations from a friend with good taste, which is exactly how RedNote users shop.
Mini-documentaries shot in the Mallorca workshops. WeChat readers stay for long stories, so we gave them the hands, the leather, and the lasts.
RedNote: proof
Micro-influencers in architecture and design, writing for people who research before they buy.
WeChat: depth
Workshop films from Mallorca. The craft story, told at the length it needs.
Weibo: debate
Comfort or style? We opened the question and let people argue it out, which beat passive likes.
18 months Results
More followers, and followers who actually buy
Over 18 months the three accounts grew more than fourfold. The more telling numbers sit in the stores and the checkout.

What stuck Takeaways
Three creators kept posting with no contract
Three RedNote collaborators went on writing about their Camper shoes with no formal agreement in place. Those posts weren’t paid for, and they’re the clearest sign the content landed.

What carries over
A point of view sells
Design buyers in China follow brands that think something. Craft stories carried this program without a single seasonal promotion.
Size the platform by intent
RedNote had the fewest followers and sent the most shoppers. Count where purchases start, then count followers.
Pick creators who mean it
Micro-influencers from architecture and design wrote like peers. Three of them kept going on their own.
