The slot Super Brand Day

One day on Tmall, and one brand in the category

Marriott runs one of the world’s largest hotel portfolios, more than 30 brands from luxury to select service. In China, it wants to keep affluent travelers inside the Marriott world, through the Bonvoy loyalty program and premium experiences at its hotels.

Tmall Super Brand Day is Alibaba’s flagship brand moment. Each category gets a single partner on a given day.

This was Marriott’s first one. And the audience, premium Chinese travelers, was already spoiled for choice.

What the day had to deliver

Commercial volume

Real sales on Tmall, inside one day.

New Bonvoy members

Sign-ups that keep travelers inside the Marriott ecosystem after the day ends.

Brand equity

A better standing with affluent Chinese travelers, who had plenty of other options.

A first attempt

Marriott had no earlier Super Brand Day to learn from. The playbook had to be written for this one.

The offer The black card

Build the whole day around one card

The hero proposition was an exclusive black card with privileges at Marriott hotels worldwide. A limited-edition tier went further, with complimentary stays and dining at select luxury properties.

What carries over

Lead with one offer

Every channel pointed at the black card, so shoppers met the same thing wherever they found the campaign.

Design for the store you sell in

Assets were built for Tmall from the start. A Tmall store has its own hierarchy, and the creative followed it.

Aim every lever at one window

Celebrity, influencers, paid media, landing pages, events, and PR all worked toward the same 24 hours.

Services delivered

  • Social
  • eCommerce
  • Media Campaign

About the data: GMV and enrollment results are given as ranges (eight figures in RMB, six figures in members) because exact numbers aren’t published. Brand lift comes from post-event brand-tracking studies. This case doesn’t cover budgets or commercial terms.
