Shiseido RQ Pyology律曜
Brand launch campaign in China
Shiseido picked China as the first market for a brand that didn’t exist yet. We built RQ Pyology from the positioning up, then took it to launch in a crowded clinical skincare segment.

The brief A brand from scratch
A new name walking into a room full of veterans
RQ Pyology is a high-end dermo-cosmetic brand from Shiseido. When we started, it had no story, no look and no customers. China was going to be its first market anywhere in the world.
That choice shows how central Chinese shoppers have become to premium beauty. It also meant the brand had to hold its own, on day one, next to established clinical skincare names.
So the job started well before any campaign. RQ Pyology needed a positioning framework, a visual system and a voice before anything went public.
The odds against a newcomer
A crowded shelf
Established clinical brands already owned the category and the trust that comes with it.
Shoppers who check
The target customer researches ingredients and follows dermatologists online. Hype gets found out fast.
Nothing to inherit
A new brand has no history to point to. Its credibility had to come from the positioning and the look.
A first market, watched
China was the first launch anywhere. Whatever we built here would be the base Shiseido scaled from.
Strategy Positioning
Write the promise before designing the box
We started with positioning and strategy, well ahead of any campaign asset. First the audience, then the promise, then an identity built around it.
The positioning, in one line
- Urban women aged 28 to 40
- Open about ingredients
- Clinical results
These are educated women who read the label and want substance over marketing. The brand had to speak to that.
Restrained type
Precise typography that keeps its voice down and lets the claims carry the weight.
Lab-inspired color
Color taken from the laboratory, so the clinical promise shows before anyone reads a word.
Real skin
Photography of real skin instead of filtered perfection, for a customer who knows the difference.
Identity The system
Every touchpoint tells the same science story
Packaging, eCommerce templates and social assets all came out of one system. A shopper meeting the brand on a product page or in a feed sees the same clinical look.

Packaging
The clinical look carried onto every pack in the range.
eCommerce templates
Product pages built from the same rules, so the store reads like the brand.
Social assets
Feed content in the same visual language as the shelf.
Voice
A tone that sits credibly beside the heritage players.
Launch Going live
Clinical claims, said in plain words
The launch activation sat on top of the brand foundation. Its job was to turn clinical claims into something people could actually feel.
Content
A coordinated content plan
One plan for launch content, so every post told the same science-backed story.
Trial
Sampling programs
Getting product onto skin. For a customer who checks claims, trying it is the proof.
Campaign
The launch campaign
Clinical claims put into the words a shopper uses, with the science still underneath.
What the launch delivered
Strong social engagement
The brand found an audience on social from launch.
Trial that converted
Sampling drove real trial, and trial turned into purchases.
Credibility that held
The scientific positioning stood up next to established competitors.
A base for more markets
Shiseido came away with a platform it can take the brand further from.
What carries over
Strategy before assets
Settle who it’s for and what it promises. The design work goes faster once that’s fixed.
Design for the skeptic
People who read ingredient lists tune out hype fast. A quiet, exact look earns a second glance from them.
Let people try it
Sampling handed careful buyers their own evidence. That’s where trial, and then conversion, came from.
